I thought that if the organizers don’t want to continue EOY, why don’t we, the fans of EOY, take matters into our own hands and organize it instead?

I contacted the previous organizer to request permission to take over the name of EOY, and continue to run it as a yearly event. To my surprise, they said yes, but they also told me that we would be on our own. They would not assist us in any way. In fact, the organizers did not have unanimous support for my decision. Some objected to the change after we announced publicly our decision to take over the reins. But of course, statements made public cannot be withdrawn easily, and much as we appreciated the team for bringing EOY to us, we weren’t going to give up our passion so easily.

We started EOY from scratch, as the previous organizers simply wanted nothing to do with it. We had to source for new sponsors, vendors and contacts. Within one year, we had to get EOY up and running as per normal, while ensuring that it lived up to the standards of previous EOYs. The team spent a lot of time and effort running around to secure assistance, support and sponsorships to make our first EOY – EOY 2009, a success. None of the team members are paid, and everyone was running on a tight schedule, despite having our own jobs, school work and families to take care of. We came to empathize with the previous organisers’ difficulties. Running a non-profit event is hard work, especially when starting from ground zero.

Our first EOY (2009), at the Drama Centre, National Library.
Picture: Catherine Mak

We triumphed over the odds, and EOY has been blossoming under our care. In the past years, EOY has been held at the Drama Centre, the Republic Cultural Centre, Marina Barrage and then to Suntec Convention Centre since 2018. We met several accomplished artistes from Japan and beyond, whose popularity among the local fans grew thanks to the exposure from EOY. We witnessed many local performers and cosplayers shine brighter on our stage year after year.

2022 saw the biggest growth ever in the history of EOY; it was post-covid and was a challenging period for us. Faced with uncertainty of reopening markets, we had no idea what we were expecting. Japan was also just gradually opening up, and it was one of the few years that we didn’t get any Japanese guests, so we tried guests from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Korea. Our stage got an upgrade with projections, many more lights and a line-array sound system. It was craziest EOYs that we ever did. I remember tears streaming down towards the end of the 2nd day, when one of the groups did a Love Live performance; I saw the EOY that I’ve always wanted to build many many years ago but couldn’t, appear in front of my eyes that very day.

No one on the team is on payroll; all of us volunteer out of love and passion for Japanese subculture. We simply believe in bringing quality Japanese pop culture entertainment to everyone. Despite the lack of remuneration, EOY is a manifestation of our dreams coming true. Many of us are also able to work on something that we love, which our regular jobs would not allow us to enjoy.

We’re a non-profit organization that seeks to promote arts and the development of talents in young people. I believe that we can all pursue our dreams, live life to the fullest, and be rewarded in the areas of our strengths, passions and interests.

We only have one lifetime, and in order to fully live our lives, we must take some risks.

I’ve spent my whole life chasing dreams, and people at times, have called me idealistic. But after in a while, I realize that we shouldn’t be too bothered by what people think of us, because I’ve learnt and seen that dreams do come true.

They really, really do.

Love,
Tim
Producer, EOY 2009-2025

—

Core Team
Angie | Curator, Creators’ Alley | angie[at]theeoy.com
Heng Lee | Operations Director
Khair | Operations Manager
Estelle | Assistant, Operations
Shin | Manager, Commercial Entities | shin[at]theeoy.com
Kiat Kai | Manager, Artistes
Cui Min | Manager, Social Media
Trini | Assistant, Artistes
Shi Hai | Stage Producer | shihai[at]theeoy.com
Jing Jie | Assistant Stage Producer
Vanessa | Stage Manager
Jakob | Stage Assistant
Tim | Producer | tim[at]theeoy.com

`

Ad-hoc Staff

Zick | Lighting Designer
Yu Bin | Assistant Stage & Artiste Manager
Anthea | Stage Assistant
Desmond | Videographer

About Us Most of the EOY staff and guests, afterparty EOY 2022 day #1.
